Landing in Korea, you will need mobile data for maps, translation and ride apps. Tell us a few things about your trip and we rank the four ways the Korea Tourism Organization's page covers. Nothing you enter leaves your browser, and we do not quote prices because they change.

The four options, as the Korea Tourism Organization describes them

OptionHow you get itWhat to know
eSIMBuy online, scan a QR code to set it up. No physical card. The official page says to check that your phone is compatible with eSIMs before you complete the purchase.
USIM (physical SIM)Roaming centers at major international airports, selected convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, Emart24; stock may vary by branch), other retailers, or order online and pick up at the airport.Travelers can buy a SIM card for unlimited data or to receive a local mobile number. Which plan includes a number depends on the product, so read the plan details.
Pocket Wi-Fi ("Wi-Fi egg")Rented at airport roaming centers.A rented portable hotspot rather than a card in your phone. Check the rental terms with the provider.
International roamingRoaming centers at Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae and Jeju airports connect your device after a simple registration process. The official page says fees and roaming-center details are on each carrier's website. If you use your own carrier's roaming, ask it what it charges in Korea before you rely on it.

The Korea Tourism Organization lists roaming information from three carriers, kt, SK Telecom and LG U+. Each carrier's website is listed as available in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese.

    How this tool ranks them

The ranking is a simple set of rules, not a market comparison. We have not compared prices, speeds or coverage between products.

When you actually meet this decision in Korea

    Before you fly

eSIMs are bought online and set up with a QR code, and USIM cards can also be ordered online and collected at the airport, so you can sort it out before you land.

    At the airport

Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae and Jeju airports have roaming centers where you can register for roaming, buy a SIM, or rent a Wi-Fi egg. If you arrive without a plan, this is where to sort it out.

    Your free backup

Free public Wi-Fi is available in most public locations, including airports and subway and train stations, according to the Korea Tourism Organization. The official page points to wififree.kr (Korean and English) for public Wi-Fi. It is a backup, not a replacement for your own data, since you will want maps between places.

    FAQ

Can I use my home SIM without doing anything?

That depends on your home carrier and plan. Roaming in Korea is registered at the airport roaming centers according to the official page, and your carrier decides the charges.

Is a pocket Wi-Fi or an eSIM better for a family?

It depends on how you travel. One shared hotspot is simple, but it only works near the device and it needs carrying and charging; an eSIM per phone avoids that if every phone is compatible. The tool above follows your answer to the sharing question.

    Is anything I type stored?

No. Your answers are not sent to us and are not saved anywhere, not even in your browser. They disappear when you reload or close the page.
