Daehangno & Naksan City Wall: a Local Half-Day
Daehangno (대학로, "University Street") is a Seoul neighborhood with many theaters, and the Naksan section of the Seoul City Wall starts at Hyehwamun Gate. Tell the planner what you want and what day you are going, and it builds a route from official tourism and city pages. Everything runs in your browser.
What each stop is, according to official pages
| Stop | Facts from the source | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Daehangno (대학로) | An artistic neighborhood stretching 1.1 km from Jongno 5-ga Intersection to Hyehwa-dong Rotary, with Marronnier Park at its center. Performances take place every day at many theaters large and small. Listed as open 24 hours, all year, for all ages. Especially active on weekends and during the street festival period (no dates given). | VISITKOREA |
| Hyehwamun Gate (혜화문) | One of the four auxiliary gates of Hanyangdoseong (the Seoul City Wall). It was seriously damaged during the Japanese colonial period and rebuilt near its original site. It is the starting point of the Naksan Mountain Trail. | Seoul Metropolitan Government |
| Naksan Mountain Trail (낙산 구간) | Runs from Hyehwamun Gate to Heunginjimun Gate, passing Naksan Park, the Seoul City Wall Museum and Dongdaemun City Wall Park. Rated low difficulty on the city's course list. | Seoul Metropolitan Government |
| Seoul City Wall Museum | In Heunginjimun Park, 283 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu. Open 09:00-18:00, last admission 17:30. Closed Mondays and January 1. Admission is free. | VISITKOREA |
How the planner decides
| Your choice | What changes |
|---|---|
| Daehangno only | One stop. No wall stops are added. |
| Walk the whole section, half day | Adds Hyehwamun Gate, Naksan Park, the Seoul City Wall Museum and Dongdaemun City Wall Park, in the order the city page lists them. |
| Short visit or short walking | Stops at Hyehwamun Gate and Naksan Park, the first part of the trail. The museum and Dongdaemun park are left out. |
| Monday | The museum is left out because it is closed on Mondays (it is also closed on January 1). |
| Museum in the plan | Daehangno goes last, because the museum's last admission is 17:30 and Daehangno is listed as open 24 hours. |
The sources do not give walking distances or times between stops, so the planner does not either. Check a map for how Daehangno connects to Hyehwamun Gate.
When you will meet this in Korea
If you have a free afternoon between big sights in Seoul, this pairing fits it. Daehangno has many theaters, and VISITKOREA says performances run every day. The page also says it is especially active on weekends and during the street festival period. The wall is a different kind of outing. The city describes Hanyangdoseong as about 18.6 km long, with about 78% intact or restored as of 2022, so the Naksan section is one slice of it, not a trek. The city's tips for walking the wall include bringing water and snacks, since the Baegak and Inwang sections have no convenience stores, and gloves and a beanie in winter. Check each show's own page before buying tickets.
Examples
Example 1: Both, half day, walk the whole section, Tuesday to Sunday gives Hyehwamun Gate, Naksan Park, Seoul City Wall Museum, Dongdaemun City Wall Park, then Daehangno.
Example 2: Both, short visit, Tuesday to Sunday gives Daehangno, then Hyehwamun Gate and Naksan Park.
Example 3: Both, half day, Monday gives Daehangno, then Hyehwamun Gate, Naksan Park and Dongdaemun City Wall Park, with a note that the museum is closed.
FAQ
Is Daehangno free to visit?
VISITKOREA lists the street as open 24 hours and does not mention an entry fee. Theater tickets are separate; check each theater.
Do I need to finish the whole City Wall?
No. The city's page splits the wall into six sections and rates the Naksan section as low difficulty. The completion certificate described there requires all four mountain sections and is not needed for a half-day.
Which station should I use?
The official pages we used do not name a station or exit, so we do not either. Use a map app and search for Hyehwamun Gate or Daehangno.
